COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
STEEL SHOT
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this
Commercial Item Description in preference to Military Specification
MIL-S-851C, type I
This commercial item description covers hardened cast steel shot for use in blast cleaning equipment for general blasting or peening purposes.
Salient characteristics:
1. Shot numbers shall be 930, 780, 660, 550, 460, 390, 330, 280, 230, 190, 170, 130, 110, or 70.
2. The shot shall be in accordance with the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Standard J444.
3. The shot shall be tested in accordance with SAE Standard J445a and exhibit durability as measured by SAE Standard J445a, using either the Average Life Cycle method or Complete Breakdown method. Shot tested by the Average Life Cycle method shall give a minimum of 1250 cycles; shot tested by the Complete Breakdown method shall typically be as shown in Table I.

4. The shot shall be of the following chemical composition.

Workmanship. The shot shall be free from defective and foreign material than will affect its serviceability. Non-magnetic contamination shall be less than 0.5 percent by volume. Grease, oil, and moisture contamination shall be less than 0.5 percent by weight.
The issues of SAE Standards J444 and J445a in effect on the date of the solicitation shall be used to determine compliance with these requirements.
Preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking. The preservation, packaging, packing, labeling, and marking shall be as specified in the contract or order.
